Farm to Grocery Store: Is it the right market for your farm?
Retail food sales in at food and beverage stores in Connecticut yields $8 billion in sales each year. While there is an increasing opportunity for local fruit and vegetable growers to market their products directly to consumers through CSAs and farmers’ markets, grocery stores is where most people purchase their food, including produce.Connecticut Farm Bureau Association initiated a project to increase in-state consumption of Connecticut-grown fruits and vegetables by optimizing understanding of marketing opportunities for larger-scale growers. Funded by a Specialty Crop Block Grant from the USDA, administered by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, this project included interviews with industry professionals, produce buyers at grocery stores large and small, and local distributors.
