You’re Invited: Soil Health & Reduced Tillage Field Walk

This hands-on event will leave plenty of time for discussion and farmer-to-farmer exchange about reduced tillage practices, raised beds, living mulch and equipment. Stick around afterward for a pizza dinner (6–7 p.m.).

Solid Ground, a UConn program for new and beginning farmers, is planning two great opportunities for farmers to learn by doing, connect with peers, and build skills on working farms.
Building a High Tunnel Monday, July 21, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Brown Farm, 537 Devotion Road, BalticThinking about building a high tunnel but don’t know where to start? Join the pros at CT Greenhouse for a full-day, hands-on build. You’ll help construct a tunnel and learn every step: corners, ground posts, bow assembly, sides, hip boards, and end walls. You’ll also have plenty of time to ask questions and connect with others planning builds of their own. Cost is $10 and includes lunch. Click here to register by Friday, July 18 at 5 p.m.
Livestock Twilight Series: Rotational Grazing (Featuring Troy Bishop, “The Grass Whisperer”) Wednesday, August 6, 5:30 – 8 p.m. Hidden Blossom Farm, 18 Old Barrows Road, Union and Wednesday, August 13, 5:30 – 8 p.m. High Silo Farm, 220 S Road, New HartfordEnjoy pasture walks at two Connecticut farms actively using rotational grazing systems. You’ll learn to size paddocks, calculate forage and dry matter needs, and get tips on rotational fencing. Farm to Table Harvest Dinner
October 3, 2025
Enjoy farm tours beginning at 4:30 p.m. and dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. Entertainer Dee Reilly will perform a variety of Country Classics beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Savor delicious foods direct from Connecticut farms. Menu highlights include Smoked Beef Brisket and Beef Sausage from Pleasant View Farms Red Angus Beef in Somers, vegetables from Fonicello Farms in Stafford Springs, native blueberries from Scantic Valley Farm in Somers, and ice cream from Fish Family Farm Creamery in Bolton. Cheese selections from Arethusa Farms and a variety of local milks from Oakridge Dairy in Ellington will be featured. Becker’s Catering of Tolland will turn all this local goodness into a delightful harvest repast. A special wine option add-on is available showcasing local wines crafted at Worthington Vineyards and Winery in Somers. In addition, TCFB welcomes sponsors for our first Farm-to-Table Harvest Dinner.
